NAGARJUNA BESHA OF LORD JAGANNATH IN 2020: TRADITION OF ODISHA

 

In India , there are four divine site ( Char Dham) like Rameswaram, Badrinath, Puri and Dwarka. Lord Jagannath Temple at  Puri is one among Char Dham.  The puri temple one of the famous is among the The temple is one of the holiest Vaishnava Hindu Char Dham (four divine sites) sites comprising Rameswaram, Badrinath, Puri and Dwarka.

Temple of Lord Jagannath is situated at Puri in state of Odisha. Jagannath is an abstract representation ofKrishna. Jagannath (Lord of Universe)  is a Sanskrit word, compounded of Jagat meaning "universe" and nātha meaning "Master" or "Lord". Thus, Jagannath means "lord of the universe" The icon of Lord Jagannath is a carved and decorated wooden stump with large round eyes and a symmetric face, and the icon has a conspicuous absence of hands or legs. Lord Jagannath is considered a non-sectarian deity. He is significant regionally in the Indian states of Odisha, Chattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, bihar, Assamm Manipur, and Tripura.

This year many persons from other States come for Darshan (see Lord) but due to Covid-19 its is difficult to get Darshna. 

HOW LORD VISHNU COME TO EARTH IN FORM OF LORD JAGANNATH: 

As per the Hindu Mythology, one night God Bishnu come to the dream of king and told him that to build his  statue. On next day, the King called his prime Minister and directed to called all carpenter in his Kingdom. God Vishwakarma came in character of  an old man and told to the kind that he will construct the God. And the kind was agreed and gives him permission to do so. But he had made some condition with the king that he will entered into a house where there are no window and door except one door and no one will disturb him for 21 days. the king agreed with that terms and conditions.

The king at that time prayed to Lord Jagannath and asked to God not to give any child who can claim the ownership of Lord as well as kingdom. Thereafter there is  no legal heir or successor who can claim rights over  the temple.

Every day queen  checked the door and heard some sound in the said house. But one day she had not heard any sound. Therefore she called the soldier and opened the door. When she opened the door, found that there is God without hand and leg and no other person is there.




RARE BESHA OF LORD JAGANNATH :NAGARJUNA BESHA

The Nagarjuna Besha of Lord Jagannath along with Lord Balabhadra and Subhadra will be held on November 27, 2020. The Nagarjuna Besha of the trinity will be held first time after 25 years. However, devotees cannot witness the Lords in the rare attire due to restriction in the wake of coronavirus outbreak. During this day Government of Odisha or Orissa has imposed restriction over the outsider to entry in Puri.

Preparation for the Nagarjuna Besha is going on in full swing. The preparation for the attire will be done at Harachandi Sahi of the Pilgrim City.

According to myth and story of Lord Jagannath, On this day, which marks killing of Sahashrarjuna by Parsuram or battle between Aurjua and his son Nagarjuna. Therefore, the deities are dressed like warriors. All mighty dressed up with golden hands, legs bids and weapons made of gold. All those gold are brought from the chamber of all mighty where the priest put all ornament only occasion they are brought from that chamber.

This Nagarjuna Besha is very rare to found. Normally lord have some Besha in every year but According to tradition, the Nagarjuna Besha is observed during October and November, the Kartika month (of Hindu calendar) when Panchaka (last five days of Kartika month) is observed as six days.

From last 24 year kartika Month were celebrate and in last 24 year “Panchuka” were celebrated as five day. In this year I mean after 24 years, “Panchuka” is celebrated at six day instead of five days. The last Nagarjuna Besha of the Lords was held in 1994.

This besha is occasionally done in the month of Kartika (Oct-Nov), when there are six days of "Panchaka". The lords are dressed like warriors. In the recent past, this vesha has been done on 16.11.1994. The previous four dates were 26.11.1993, 3.11.1968, 16.11.1967 and 26.11.1966.

During last Nagarjuna Besha of the Lords was held in 1994 where Lakhs of devotees to wait for the auspicious occasion to have darshan of the deities in Nagarjuna Besha, the rare among all the costumes.
