SUN TEMPLE IN INDIA
1- Sun temple, Konark (Black Pagoda)
This is a world heritage site Konark Sun Temple of Odisha and it is in the list of the seven wonder of India. The arts of the temple are magnificent and best attraction place for the tourists. As per the history, this temple was built by or engaged of 1200 worker, took 12 years to complete and expenditure was 12 Crore. This temple is also famous due to another story i.e. 12 years boy completed the temple by doing the final touch in top. For which he jumped into the sea and suicide for saving the life of 1200 workers. The father of the 12 years boy was the superintendent ( in-charge / head ) of worker named Bisumaharana.
The work was such type that the Lord Sun / Surya was on flitting or in Air. The tradition was as per the rotation of sun. This temple shows and explains the time of a day and what one should do, on which time. And most important thing is that the first rays of sun falls in the Garbagruha (Idol of Lord Sun). this monument is world famous temple due to its story and arts & design of the temple for which this place has developed by tourism attractions.
2- Sun Temple Modhera:-
Sun temple at Modhera is situated on the Nank of the Pushpavati River in Mehsana District of Gujarat . This temple was built in 11th century AD by King Bhima I of Chalukya Dynasty. The temple structure is divided into three part i.e. 1st one is Shrine hall ( Gudha Mandap), 2nd one is assembly hall (Sabha Mandap) and final one is Rerervoir Hall ( Kunda mandap).
This temple is dedicated to Lord Sun / Surya. during the construction period, a Diamond placed on the head of Lord Surya. and the construction of the temple is such a way that the first ray of sun fall on the head of idol (diamond) which create a unique light. The assembly hall (Sabha Mandap) stands on 52 pillars which represent 52 weeks of a year. And the entire monument has magnificent arts which attracts the tourists.
3- Sun temple,Martand:-
Martand sun temple is located at Anantnag (five miles or 7.5 Km from Anantang), Jammu and Kashmir is now in ruins but the site is listed as national importance in the region. This temple is also dedicated to lord Sun. the martand word is derived from Sanskrit word which means Surya (sun). This temple was built by Lalitaditya Muktapida who the third ruler of the Karkota Dynasty during 8th Century AD. This temple was destroyed by the Kashmir ruler Sikandar Shah Miri during 14th century AD at his ruling
period. This historical temple is at present on ruins stage.
4- Sun Temple Gwalior:-
Sun temple of Gwalior is similar to the Sun temple of Konark and among the famous pilgrimage centers there. This temple also dedicated to Lord Surya. Gwalior Sun Temple was built by the Brila Group in the year 1988 and the temple design is somehow similar to the Sun Temple, Konark including shape of a chariot. The workers were took 4 years to complete this temple where the chariot has seven horses and Nabaghara are placed on top of the entrance gate.
5- Navlakha Temple Ghumli:-
Navlakha Temple at Ghumli, was built by Jethwa Rylers in 11th Century dedicated to Sun God or Surya Temple and is one of the oldest temple of Gujurat. During the construction period the cost of the temple was 9 Lakh for which this temple name is “NAVLAKHA TEMPLE”. This temple is situated at Ghumli in State of Gujurat.
6- Suryanar Kovil, Kumbakonam, Tamil Nadu:-
Suryanar Kobil Temple is one temple among the ancient Sun Temple in India. Surya Kobil is dedicated to lord Sun and is one of the nine Navagraha (solar System) Temples in Tamil Nadu.
This temple was built by Kulottunga Choladeva in 11th century (1060 AD to 1118 AD). This magnificent temple built Dravidian architecture Style. This famous temple is located at Kumbakona District in state of Tamil Nadu.
7- Balaji Sun Temple Unao:-
Unao Balaji sun temple is located at Datia District (17 kilometers from district head quarter) of Madhya Predesh and this temple is also dedicated to Lord Surya. Balaji Sun Temple Unao is popular due to its unique architecture and design. This temple is popular know in name of Balaji Temple and was built during the pre-history period by the King of Datia. The people believe that any type of skin disease and eye disease can be cured in this place on gentleness of lord Sun. therefore many devotees are coming to this place throughout year.
8- Sun temple Ranchi:-
The elegant Sun Temple, Bundu is located at Bundu which is about 39 Kilometers from Ranchi on Ranchi to Tata Road Jharkhanda State. This temple is also famous in name of Sun Temple Ranchi.
It is shaped in the form of huge chariot with 18 wheels and seven horses as if ready to take up for journey. Tusu Festival is the famous festival of this temple and is celebrated natives on 25th June of every year.
9- Sun Temple Katarmal:-
Katarmal Surya Temple is one of the ancient sun Temple in India which is situated inside the thick deodars forest of Kumaon hills, Kosi Village near Almora (12 Kilometers from Almora). This temple was built by Katyuri King in 9th century AD. The main temple is surrounded by 44 small temples and named as Burhadita or Vraddhaditya. This sun Temple at present is ruined situation.
10- Surya Pahar Temple Assam:-
Surya Pahar Temps is also one of ancient sun temple and is located near Goalpara town and one of the least known archeological sites in Assam. The temple is located at hill station with a numbers of rock cut ancient Shivalingam. During ancient period this site or location name was “Pragjyotishpur”. According to mythology and Kalika Purana (written in the 10th Century B.C.), Lord Brahma created Pragjyotishpura city which is equal to heaven (city of Indra). The word ‘Pragjyotishpura’ is constructed with two word "prag' which refers to "EAST' and "jyotisha' which refers to star-astrology. Pragjyotisha is thus said to mean, "eastern city of astrology'. The Surya Pahar is an ancient Sun Worship Centre.
11- Suryanarayana Temple, Domlur:-
Suryanarayan Temple in Domlu Bangaluru is amongst the most famous Sun God Temple in India. This temple was built by Mr. Patel D.R.Krishna Readdy in the year 1995 and dedicated to Lord Surya ( Lord Sun). the artists were craved magnificent statue outside of the temple where Vaishnavi, Brahma, Nagaraja, Saraswathi, Ganesh statue are placed.
12- Dakshinaarka Sun Temple, Gaya:-
Dakshinaarka Sun temple, Gaya is an ancient sun temple and has been mentioned in the epics and dedicate to lord Surya (Lord Sun). According to history, the temple was built by King Prataparudra of Warangal Dynasty dated back to the 13th century. The prime religious importance to the Hindu temple in Gaya but Gaya is famous for Buddhist Shrines. From archeologist point of view this is important site.
13- Deo Surya Temple, Deo:-
Deo Surya Temple is dedicated to Lord Sun for Chhath Puja. The face of the temple is west direction. According to Hindu mythology, this temple was built by Lord Vishawakarma in one night. But this temple was built in 8th century with mixed architecture of Nagri, Dravidian and Vesara. This temple is not huge or big temple like other and this temple is confine with Chhath Puja. Therefore this temple is not so popular. The Temple is located at Deo Town at Aurangabad in state of Bhiar.
14- Surya Narayana Temple, Arasavali:-
Arasavali sun temple is also one of the most highly visited temple in the region. This temple is one of ancient sun temple which was built by King Devendra Varma during his ruling period (7th Century AD). The present location of the temple is at Arasavali, Srikakulam (1 KM distance) in the state of Andhar Pradesh.
15- Biranchinarayan Sun Temple; Buguda:-
This temple is dedicated to lord Sun (Surya). This temple was built by King Srikara Bhanjadeva in 1790. Konark Sun temple is reflected in this temple and the God is wooden God. Therefore, this temple is called wooden Konark. The temple is located at Bugida, Ganjam District, in state of Odisha.
1616-Sri Biranchinarayan Temple, Palia
This is another sun temple
within the territory of Orissa / Odisha which was built in 13th
century AD. This temple is not so much popular like Konark. In this temple
dedicated to Lord Sun and the stone Idol of Lord Sun (Surya) is worshiping by
the priest. The temple is located on the
way of
Bhadrakh-Chandbali Road (15 KM from Bhadrakh).
