ODISHA STATE MUSEUM
One day I had decided to
take leave from work and to stay at Bhubaneswar for 2 /3 days to refresh the
mind for which I went Bhubaneswar. In Bhubaneswar I leaved in my uncle’s house
and me and my cousin brother were decided to enjoy the days. I had not earlier
seen the State Museum of Odisha so both were decided to go there. What I have
seen in Odisha State Museum that I have narrated below.
HISTORY OF MUSEUM
This State Museum was
initially established by two notable Historians Prof. N.C.Banerjee and Prof.
Ghanshyam Dash of Ravenshaw College, Cuttack, in the year of 1932. They were
collected the archaeological treasures from various places and preserved those
in a small building within the premises of the College. In l938, by a suitable
order, the then Governor of Orissa issued the order to transform this building
into the Provincial Museum of Odisha and one of the best museum in India.
Initially, this
Museum was only an Archaeological Museum with a collection of sculptures,
terracotta, numismatics, copper plates and specimens of fine arts. Stone
sculptures were divided into three groups related to their styles such as
Gandhara Art, North Indian Art, Odisha Art, and each group were subdivided into
three part such as Buddhist, Jain and Brahmanical. And the next room
Terracotta objects and coins were also organized according to their age,
dynasty and types.
Maintaining close
contact with the general public and the Archaeological Department of the
Government of India and other States, the Museum continued to grow. The
capital of Orisha was shifted from Cuttack to Bhubaneswar in l947-48 for which
the the Provincial Museum was also shifted to the new capital i.e Bhubaneswar.
The foundation stone of the present building was laid on 29th December, l957 by
Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the then President of India. Since then this building is
continuing in the name of Odisha State museum.

At present this building is 2 storage
building and expand this museum into several types. You can find following
things such as:
1. FIRST AUDITORIUM
in first auditorium hall, you may find
out a brief of the ancient culture of Odisha, business with foreigner,
religious culture in one hand. And other hand first freedom fighting with
British in name of ‘PAIKA Bidhroa” in the year of 1817, Kalinga War during
the period of the Great King Ashoka and Boudha religion in Orissa.
2. ARCHAEOLOGY SECTION
In next room you may find the ancient
statues of Lord Buddha with different position which were collected from
different places of Orissa and some of them are B.C (before Christ) and
exhibits in this hall. In same section you also get about the Gods like Shiva,
Bishnu, Ganesh Kartika etc and goddess Kali, Laxmi etc of Hindu which statues
were worshiped during the ancient period. Some of them where in destroy
position and among them some are from B.C.
3. COIN GALLERY
In next room the authority put the
exhibition of collection of Indian Coins from Indus valley civilization to till
date. All those coins are put chronologically from ancient to Morden age
as per the dynasty. And above of the coin, the authority is explained about
their age and Dynisty for the visitors who can read and understand all those. Some
of coins are Gold and Silver and all the coins are put in small glass houses.
4. MINING AND GEOLOGY DEPARTMENT
In next to the coin room, you
may get the ore and mining material which are excavated during mining in
Orissa. These material are exhibited the original ore in glass house such as
Gold,silver, coal, copper, iron bauxite, etc. The ore are different types for
which the authority put them as per the name and its different types. The ore
have been explained by the authority which ore, where it is available etc.
5. NATURAL HISTORY GALLERY
In this room you may find out the
history of the animals and birds. Animal kingdom is an unique creation of
nature. The world gets alive with these varieties of creatures. To see all those
magnificent animals one has to visit the desert, explore rainforest, high
mountains and tropical grassland. An inquisitive eye always moves round to have
a glance give a glance of these wonderful creatures. Natural history gallery
gives a vivid account and depicts the replica of some of the specimens of our
animal kingdom.
The section comprises
two spacious halls. The first hall displays local birds along with some
migratory birds, foreign birds and also some endangered bird species. The Zoo
diorama organised in this hall displays animals like white Tiger, Hyaena, Bear
etc along with foreign specimens as Zebra, kangaroo and Jaguar within their
natural environment and Milieu.
The Second hall of
naturel history section is enriched with mammals like tiger, leopard, Otter,
pangolin, Nilgai etc. Attempts has been made to keep all these animals in
separate diorama showcases, creating their natural habitat so as to give
the illusion of real animals before the visitors. But actually, the dead
animals have been preserved here after a series of chemical treatment.
6. IVORY GALLERY
The state museum has added extral
gallery on its 60th foundation day celebration and that gallery
dedicated to 18th century and contemporary ivory arts and culture
works. One cannot imagine such type of arts can be carved on ivory. The Ivory
arts is very rare art and expensive at present days. All these ivory arts were
found in Orissa and put those in museum for public. this is the best place
for the photography.
7. BRASS GALLERY
This gallery is in
first floor of the establishment. In this gallery you may find the statue
of lord Ganesh which is built in brass. During ancient era the peoples
were use brass material as household articles, brass gods, worship
articles, decorative doll, statue etc.
8. ART AND CRAFT GALLERY
In this gallery one can
get the ancient magnificent arts material where the arts are carved out. The
materials are different types of such as brass, palm leaf, animals’ horn, on
cloths, coconut, stones statue etc. Those were used during ancient era in
Orissa. These arts where very famous but due to circumstance changes
everything’s. Those arts are not available in market anymore.
9. PATTA PAINTING GALLERY
Orissa is famous in
name of pattachitra or pattapainting. It is the traditional; paintings of
Orissa where one may find out the magnificent arts are carved out on cloth. The
arts are mainly dedicated and specially inspired by lord Jagannath and
Vaishnava culture. The word patta chitra is derived two Sanskrit word, patta
means canvas and chitra means picture or paining. Many persons are adopted this
tradition as source of income or livelihood.
10. HANDLOOM AND TESTILES OF ODISHA
The handloom industry
in the State has a long tradition of excellence and handlooms of Odisha have
been widely appreciated for their intricate skill and craftsmanship
manifested in the fabrics, especially the unimitable ikat designs. The State is
famous for its silk IKAT (Bandha) weavers an intricate process in which warp
and weft threads are tie-dyed to produce the designed pattern on the loom while
weaving. The decorative motifs include rows of birds and animals, fishes,
seashells rudraksh beads and temple spires Sambalpur, Sonpur, Berhampur,
Mayurbhanj and Nuapatna all product a striking range in tusser slik whose
brilliance glaze and texture is unmatched. the rare silk fabric produced at
Nuapatna in Cuttack district embellished with varses from the Geeta
Govinda is used to dress the idols in Jagannath Temple.
11. ORNAMENT GALLERY.
In this room you may
earn the knowledge of Ornament. A historical pageant of costumes, ornaments and
jewellery of community or a nation is an essential aspect of its cultural
heritage. Of many cultural traditions maintained by the people from time
immemorial none has been probably so intense and intimate as the habit of
wearing ornaments of various kinds. Jewellery is regarded as a traditional form
of wealth, but it is also used for personal decoration both by men and women.
It thus sense to satisfy the aesthetic needs of the poor and rich alike,
the former by the simple ornaments of sliver copper, brass and beads and the
latter by the dazzling and elegant ornaments of precious stones and Gold.
12. MUSICAL INSTRUMENT GALLERY
In this room one can
get the musical instruments. Here the Government exhibitions many types of
instruments which were / are used during the traditional ceremony
or festivals. All these instruments are local instrument. The said
instruments are put on exhibition within
their natural environment and Milieu for which one audience can easily understand.
13.POSTAL STAMPGALLERY
This gallery is in first floor of the
establishment where one can find out the different type of stamp which was / is
issued by the Government of India. It is the best collection of this museum.
The stamps are from different price, issued in different years. This room is
very small.
14.ORIYA FILM GALLERY
This gallery us in 2nd floor
of the building. This is located one side of the building. Only oriya films
different photos are collected from beginning to till date.
The renovation work is
going on inside of the museum for expand of the museums. this place is best for
students to gain the experience regarding the ancient scripts, arts, and many
more which are exhibits
The government of odisha decides the financial
budget for improvement of the Museum in every financial year.
State museum
is located to the main road and for tourists, the ticket price is @ Rs. 10/-
per person without ticket you cannot entry into the halls. photography is
allowed but during the entry time the authority takes extra charges for
photography. Here also have the facility of vehicle parking which is extra cost
@ Rs. 10/- per vehicle.

railway station is Bhubaneswar Station just 3/4 kilometres distance and
Airport
is just 5 kilometres from this place and
By
road the location is Bhubaneswar-Puri road infront of the Bhubaneswar District
Court and side of the BJB Autonomous College at Kalpana Squire
