Temple
of Lord Jagannath is situated at Puri in state of Odisha. Jagannath is an
abstract representation of Lord Krishna. Jagannath
(Lord of Universe) is a Sanskrit word,
compounded of Jagat meaning "universe"
and nātha meaning "Master" or "Lord". Thus, Jagannath means "lord of
the universe" The icon of Lord Jagannath is a carved and decorated
wooden stump with large round eyes and a symmetric face, and the icon has a
conspicuous absence of hands or legs. Lord Jagannath is considered a
non-sectarian deity. He is significant regionally in the Indian states
of Odisha, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Gujarat, Assam, Manipur and tripura.
ABOUT TEMPLE:
Lord
Jagannath temple is considerable over 61 metres (200 ft) high. Lord
Jagannath Temple was constructed by King Chodaganga. The king started the
construction and Jaga Mohan or the assembly hall
and Vimana or chariot of the temple were constructed during his
reign. Later Anangabhima Deva completed the construction of the
temple in 1161AD. The temple compound covers an area of over 400,000 square
feet (37,000 mt), and is surrounded by a high fortified wall which is 20
feet (6.1 m) high wall and known as Meghanada Pacheri. Another wall
known as kurma bedha surrounds the main temple. Under the compound area there
are at least 120 temples. Lord Jagannath temple has four door
to entry into the temple namely Utara Parsho, Dakhina Parso, Purba Parso And
Paschima Parso. This temple also have some specialty i.e. the process of
cooking. Goddess Laxmi herself come to kitchen (Khanda sala) to cook.
LORD:
As
per the Hindu Mythology, one night God Bishnu come to the dream of king and
told him that to build his statue. On
next day, the King called his prime Minister and directed to called all carpenter
in his Kingdom. God Vishwakarma came in character of an old man and told to the kind that he will
construct the God. And the kind was agreed and gives him permission to do so.
But he had made some condition with the king that he will entered into a house
where there are no window and door except one door and no one will disturb him
for 21 days. the kind agreed with that terms and conditions.
The king at that time prayed to Lord Jagannath and asked to God not to give any child who can claim the ownership of Lord as well as kingdom. Thereafter there is no legal heir or successor who can claim rights over the temple.
Every day queen checked the door and heard some sound in the said house. But one day she had not heard any sound. Therefore she called the soldier and opened the door. When she opened the door, found that there is God without hand and leg and no other person is there. Since then the lord Jagannath statue is like present day.
There
are many mahima (Lila) of lord Jagannath. Lord Jagannath is the 10th
Avatar of Lord Vishnu. When Kali youga come to an end, the lord Jagannath and
Balabhadra will come with black and white horse
respectively and will kill all the evil person and by hand of lord
Jagannath, the Kali Youga will be ended.
Sometime after
the war, when Pandavas heard of Lord Krishna’s death, they along with Draupadi,
gave up royalty and the body of lord Krishna burned. The whole body of lord
Krishna turned into ass except Naval part and in present day it is called
“BRAHMA . The said Brahma (sole of lord
Jagannath) is in the wood statue and we
are worshiping the said statue by name of Lord Jagannath. Without Brahma the
statue is as simple wood.
According to Hindu mythology, King
Indradyumna was a Lunar Dynasty king of Somavamsa lineage. A pilgrim came
before King Indradyuman and described the great God
Nila Madhava (Blue Vishnu) being worshipped at Nilachal (Blue
Mountain) in Odra (Odisha). The pilgrim disappeared after telling
the story. At the king’s request, his priest and his younger brother Vidyapati
went in search of the legendary divinity. Vidyapati reached the forest in Sabaradwipa
on the banks of Mahanadi river. The Sabara king, Biswabasu, received Vidyapati and
promised to show him Nila Madhava the next morning. Vidyapati did not touch
food or water before seeing the Lord Nila Madhava. Seeing the excitement of
Vidyapati, the Sabara king had him bathed in Rohini-kunda and seated him under
the kalpaw tree. Vidyapati saw Nila Madhava being worshipped by the Devas. Then
Vidyapati returned to Avanti, the capital of King Indradyumna.Vidyapati’s
described to King Indradyumna, thereafter the King set out for Nila Madhava,
along with the priest, Vidyapati, and his followers. But as it turned out, Nila
Madhava had disappeared on the very next day. Upon reaching the spot, they
found the god missing and the entire area covered with the golden sand of the
coast. The shocked king Indradyumna was apprised of the message of Brahma by Narada : that the King must worship the deity with one
thousand Aswamedha yajnas.

RATH YATRA
The
annual festival called of lord Jagannath is called Ratha Yatra, celebrated in month of June
or July every year in states of Odisha. The image of lord along with the other
two associated deities ( Balabhadra and Subhadra) , is ceremoniously brought
out of the Garbhagriha of Bada Deula (chief Temple) They
are placed in a chariot thereafter pulled by numerous volunteers to the Gundicha Temple (located at a distance of
nearly 3 km or 1.9 mile). They stay there for 9 days, after which
they are returned to Bada Deula.
Similar processions are organized at Jagannath temples throughout the world.
During the festive public procession of Jagannath in Puri lakhs of devotees
visit Puri to see Lord Jagganath in chariot.
Nabakalebara
is a symbolic recreation of the wooden forms of three Hindu deities ((Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra) at Jagannath Temple, puri . The year of
Nabakalebara is when the full moon occurs twice during the month of Aashaddha.
The
grand festival, Rath Yatra, is incomplete without the king. The king come and
swipe the Rath with a golden broom after that the Rath Yatra proceed. India is
a democracy country but still there is only one King till date.
