THE TEMPLE WHERE THE NAGA AND
NAGINI ARE THE GATEKEEPER AND THE PROTECTOR OF THE TEMPLE: RAJARANI TEMPLE
The
temple city is famous for ancient temple is at large. Among them one of temple
name RAJARANI Temple. This temple is an ancient temple and was build during 11th
century (between 1000 to 1050) by King Yajati and dedicated this temple to Lord
Shiva. The historian says that this is a Shiva temple and the ancient name of
the temple was Indresvara or Indralingesvara. This temple was renovated in the
year 1903 during the British Ruling period and the present scenario is after
the renovation of temple.

WHY THIS TEMPLE NAMED AS RAJARANI
TEMPLE?
The
main entrance of the Temple may be found two snake with human statue which is
known as Naga and Nagini. These two Naga (King of all Snake) and Nagini (Queen
of all Snake) are represented Duarapala
(Gatekeeper). These two snakes are not normal snake. According to Hindu Myth
Naga and Nagini are called as auspicious and the symbol of fertility and
sexuality. Still one knows about the story behind the temple and the connection
of Naga Lok. Therefore this temple named as RAJARANI Temple. This temple is
referred to locally as the “Prem Mandir” or “temple of Love”.
DEITY:
The
Historian has made opinion that this temple was dedicated to lord Shiva for
which the two Snake symbol is at the gate like as gatekeeper. The Lord Shiva’s
wears Snake named as Vasuki. Vasuki is the King of all Snake. The temple is
faced to east side. The these two Snake Statue are also made in other side i.e.
north, west and south part of the temple.
At
present inside of the temple is nothing. Just a vacate place. The temple is
without deity but still the statue of Snake are available on the wall of the
temple. Therefore the Historian are believed that this temple was built by the
kind to dedicate to Lord Shiva. But question is that if this temple is
dedicated to lord Shiva then at present the Statue or Lingam of Lord is where?
No one have the answer of this question.
ARCHITECTURE
OF THE TEMPLE:
On
the wall of the temple is full of arts with the Naga and Nagini and other arts.
From the ground to half of the temple is full of arts and statue like as leady
riding on horse, leady dancer and other erect statue. From upper side (half of
the temple to till top of the temple) have only the well design and arts only. This
temple is divided into two part. First part Is the Bhogo mandap and second part
is worship place to Deity. the first part of the temple or at entrance gate,
Naga and Nagini Statue is available and only front part of the front part is
only have the Statue of Nab-Ghraa on the top of the gate. The entire arts are
Kalinga Architecture. Normally that period many temple was build and the design
are maximum have similarity with each other. This temple is also similar design
from upper part like as Lord Jagannath Temple or Lingraj Temple.
The
Rajarani temple is currently under the supervision of the Archaeological Survey
of India and is kept as a stamped monument, hence tourists are required to
purchase tickets during enter into the temple.
The entrance of the temple was
carved using red and yellow sandston and Rajarani from where the temple gets
its name. Inside of the temple is very simple and there is no carved. From the
back side if anyone see the temple, he / she may fell that the temple is
associated with a large numbers of pillars which take the shape of temple.
PRESENT DAY SCENARIO:-
In
present day, there is no deity in the temple but due to the carved, it is very
popular and attract the tourist in any religion. After taken by the Archaeological Survey of India,
the total care of the temple and around the temple takes care by the Government
and the Government provide fund for it. During the day time the college
student, couple are gathering around the temple.
In
every year in month of January, a festival conducts in name of Rajarani Music
Festival. The main focus of the festival is to encourage the Classical Music as
well as dance.
HOW
TO REACH
Location of the temple is one side of
the city and there are three way to go one is from city, second is from Cuttack
side on the Cuttack- Puri bypass road and third is from Puri side on the
Puri-Cuttack road.

The nearest airport is Biju Patnaik
International Airport which is known as Bhubaneswar Airport and the distance from
Air port to temple is approximately 3 kilometers or 1.9 mil.
By Train:
There are five Rail Station nearby temple
and all are within city limity i.e. (from North to south) Patia Halt,
Mancheswar, Vani Vihar, Bhubaneswar Station and Lingaraj Temple Road. The main
station i.e. Bhubaneswar station, is the nearest of the temple which distance
is 3.8 KM.
